      《第四十二街》很显然属于那种非常典型的百老汇情节：一个优秀的百老汇导演想要制作最后一部作品，但他的女主角却在首演前夕受了伤，于是被一个新的候选者替代，于是新人大获成功。这样的情节看似落入俗套，但本片通过加入一位年老的富翁的爱情故事，以及女主角并没有因为金钱的诱惑而对恋人恩断意绝，使得这种老套的故事情节获得了许多新意。出演本片主角的演员也的确是来自百老汇的著名戏剧演员，这给本片在表演上的可看性增添了不可多得的色彩。本片最后二十几分钟的精彩戏剧演出，其精彩的程度能够使得观众凝神屏气，脸上浮现陶醉的微笑，因为本片的音乐和演唱有一种直透人心的力量。
