I'll lay you 3-to-1 the kid don't last a round. Willy Grogan: Make sure this pigeon don't get away. Walter Gulick: Sorry, Mr. Grogan. It wouldn't have happened but he don't know how to behave himself with a lady. Dolly Fletcher: Thanks, Galahad. Willy Grogan: Galahad was what they call a knight of the round table, Howie. He was also something of a square. I can't state this as a positive fact, but he probably died very young. Maynard: What's the matter? Dolly Fletcher: Nothing. It's love in bloom. Maynard: Goodbye. I've watched it bloom before. Willy Grogan: Look, Dolly... this may seem funny to you but... the kid doesn't know about us. Dolly Fletcher: I gathered that much. I can even quote you. "Rose, this is Miss What's-her-name. She just happened to drop by this morning." Were you so scared, you couldn't even remember my name? Willy Grogan: Dolly... Dolly Fletcher: What is there to know about us anyway? Am I a lady barber or something? They've got sex in the Bronx, too, so what's the mystery? Willy Grogan: I'm only trying to tell you, she's only a baby... a protected baby. Dolly Fletcher: Oh come off it! Babies aren't built like that. And besides... if you're such a blue-nosed puritan about your sister... then - - just forget it. Willy Grogan: I just didn't know she was coming up here, understand? I-I-I just wasn't prepared. Dolly Fletcher: I know. You're not prepared for a lot of things. I'm beginning to get the idea. Rose Grogan: Are you a fighter? Walter Gulick: Not really. A lot of people have different ideas about it though. Rose Grogan: I see. Walter Gulick: Do you belong up here? [Chuckles] Walter Gulick: Uh, I mean uh, I've never seen you around before.       • Lew Nyack: [from outside] GALAHAD! HEY GALAHAD! Rose Grogan: Who's Galahad? Walter Gulick: That's me. Excuse me. Nice to have met you. Rose Grogan: Thank you. Lew Nyack: What did you think when you read all that phony publicity about yourself? Walter Gulick: You mean about the 17 knockouts? Lew Nyack: Yeah. Walter Gulick: At first I kinda felt sorry for Willy. Lew Nyack: Sorry for him? Walter Gulick: He's not a bad guy, Lew. Maybe he's got reason for being a liar. It'd be nice if we can help him out. Lew Nyack: Help HIM out? Well how about YOU? [points to a losing boxer being carried to a stretcher] Lew Nyack: Look at that! Suppose you step out there in that ring and Ezzard Bailey separates you from what little brains you got left? Huh? Walter Gulick: Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. Dolly Fletcher: He should be arrested. Rose Grogan: Who? Dolly Fletcher: Your brother, naturally. He's responsible for this. Rose Grogan: What do you do when you feel like this? Walter Gulick: People usually get married, I understand. It's about the best and the safest thing to do. Walter Gulick: Don't push me, Willy. I'm a grease monkey that won't slide so easily! Walter Gulick: Shut up, I said! Walter Gulick: You can't yell loud enough to make me shut up! Till I tell you about what I think of the fight game. I think it stinks! And when I get out of it what I want, I'm quitting! I'm through! No, I'm not marrying Rose because she's your sister, Willy. But in spite of it. [Willy grabs Walter by his shirt getting ready to punch him] Walter Gulick: I'm waiting, Willy. I'm waiting. Dolly Fletcher: Stop it! What's the matter with you anyway? Willy Grogan: What's the matter with me? This cream-headed clown wants to marry my sister, that's what's the matter with me. Dolly Fletcher: Well? At least he's not asking her to hang around for 3 or 4 years, Willy. Otto Danzig: Here's $500 to help you get lost. They'll be somebody else in Galahad's corner. Someone who'll know what to do. Someone who'll make sure that he bleeds. That'll open up the cuts instead of closing them. Any bright ideas? Lew Nyack: Yeah, I got a bright idea. It's what you can do with this $ [Lew throws the $500 cash back at Otto] Willy Grogan: Lew! Marvin: We've been having a quiet, kind of professional talk in here with him. Lew Nyack: [instructing Galahad from outside the ring during the final winning round of the fight against Sugar Boy Romero] Kid, listen to me. He's bound to start throwing left hooks sooner or later. Now when he does, straighten him out with a left, then cross him with your right. You hear? Willy Grogan: [as he sees Galahad driving off with his sister Rose in the red Model T car] Hey! Why did she have to go off in that beet-juice jalopy with him? Dolly Fletcher: You're asking me? Willy Grogan: She could've gone with Maynard and Lew, couldn't she? Dolly Fletcher: Oh, Willy, when you're 21 and you look like Rose, you don't have to ride with Lew and Maynard. Willy Grogan: What's that supposed to mean? Dolly Fletcher: You want diagrams? Willy Grogan: Now, look, Dolly... Dolly Fletcher: That's just what I'm going to do...look at Maynard's corned beef. I promised I'd put a low flame under it. [Dolly gives Willy a kiss] Max Lieberman: [at the Independence Day Picnic] Plenty of food, men. Plenty of food. You think you've eaten lobster before, Maynard, just wait till you taste this. Well, Maynard? Maynard: [looking at his plate of lobster with little enthusiasm] I ain't saying this lobster is for the birds, but I'd rather be eating my own corned beef. Father Higgins: Lobster? I think I'd like some of that, is it good? Maynard: Fine, Father. [Galahad starts to sing "I Got Lucky"] Dolly Fletcher: [as Maynard carves up the corned beef] You think I did all right? Maynard: You cooked this great. It cuts real fine! Willy Grogan: [as Willy and Lew walk in the kitchen arguing about Rose's whereabouts] Let's get one thing settled, Lew. Exactly what time was it when you saw Rose leave the picnic? Lew Nyack: I told you before, 6:30, quarter to 7, 10 to 7 - I didn't make a note of it. Dolly Fletcher: [as Dolly and Lew munch on some of Maynard's corned beef] What's all the commotion about? She was with Galahad, wasn't she? Willy Grogan: I know who she was with. And I'll tell you something else I know: It's 20 minutes to Dolly Fletcher: Could she be safer with the F.B.I.? Willy Grogan: Which way were they going?
