      • [opening narration for episodes: Train Job, Bushwacked, Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynestown] Book: After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying. [opening narration for episodes: Safe, Ariel, War Stories, Heart of Gold] Mal: Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. The Central Planets, thems formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. She's a transport ship; Firefly class. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher for some reason, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius sister outta some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile. You understand. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is. opening song: Take my love, take my land / Take me where I cannot stand / I don't care, I'm still free / You can't take the sky from me / Take me out to the black / Tell 'em I ain't comin' back / Burn the land and boil the sea / You can't take the sky from me / There's no place I can be / Since I found serenity / But you can't take the sky from me Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: This sounds like something from Science Fiction. Zoë Washburne: Honey, we live in a space ship. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: So? [hearing the entire pub break out into Jayne's tribute song] Dr. Simon Tam: No... this must be what going mad feels like. Dr. Simon Tam: I swear, when it's appropriate. Kaylee Frye: Simon, the whole point of swearing is that it ain't appropriate. [about Jayne] Dr. Simon Tam: You're like... a trained ape. Without the training. Dr. Simon Tam: You know, I've saved lives. Dozens, maybe hundreds. I - I reattached a girl's leg, her whole leg. She named her hamster after me. I get a hamster. He [Jayne] Dr. Simon Tam: drops a box of money. He gets a town. Kaylee Frye: Hamster is nice! Mal: You tell me right now little Kaylee, you really think you can remove the booby-trap? Kaylee Frye: Sure. Yeah. [pause] Kaylee Frye: I think so. Besides, if I mess it up, it's not like you'll be able to yell at me. [after marrying Saffron by mistake] Saffron: We've been wed. Aren't we to become one flesh? Mal: Well, no. Uh, we're still two fleshes here. Saffron: I don't please you? Mal: You can't please me - you've never met me. Mal: What was she after? Book: Besides molesting innocent captains? Saffron: You're a good man. Mal: You clearly haven't been talking to anyone else on this boat. Mal: You're all gonna be here when I wake up? Book: We'll be here. Mal: Good. That's good... Mal: I don't like fellows that kill me. Not in general. [to Simon] River Tam: I remember everything, and some of its made up and some of it can't be quantified but I understand. You gave up everything you had to find me, you found me broken. It抯 hard for you. Inara Serra: What is this? A duck? Kaylee Frye: It's a swan. I like it. Inara Serra: You do? Kaylee Frye: Looks like it was made with, you know, longing. Made by a person who really longed to see a swan. Inara Serra: Perhaps because they'd only heard of them by rough description. Dr. Simon Tam: Captain, why did you come back for us? Mal: You're on my crew. Dr. Simon Tam: Yeah, but you don't even like me. Why'd you come back? Mal: You're on my crew. Why are we still talking about this? Mal: It looks like we arrived just in the nick of time. What does that make us? Zoë Washburne: Big damn heroes, sir. Mal: Ain't we just. Mal: Now all we need are some patients. Dr. Simon Tam: Corpses. For this to work River and I will have to be dead. Jayne Cobb: I'm starting to like this plan. Mal: Okay, uh, I'm lost. I'm angry. And I'm armed. Mal: One of you is gonna fall and die. And I'm not cleaning it up. Dr. Simon Tam: I've never shot anyone before. Book: I was there, son. I'm fair sure you haven't shot anyone yet. Mal: There's plenty of my orders she didn't obey. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: Name one. Mal: She married you! Adelai Niska: Mr. Reynolds. You died, Mr. Reynolds. Mal: Seemed like the thing to do. Adelai Niska: When you die, I can't hurt you any more. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: So, I'm Zoe. Now, what do I do? Mal: Probably not talk quite so much. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: Right. Less talking. She's terse - I can be terse. Once in flight school I was laconic. River Tam: I don't belong... dangerous like you. Can't be controlled... can't be trusted. Everyone could just... go on without me and not have to worry. People could be who they wanted to be... could be with the people they wanted. Live simple... no secrets. Dr. Simon Tam: No... River Tam: I'll be fine. I'll be your bounty, Jubal Early... and I'll just fade away. Jubal Early: Your sister's becoming a real annoyance. Dr. Simon Tam: I feel for you. Book: I just feel such a fool. Jayne Cobb: Yeah. All those years of priest trainin'. Taken out by one bounty hunter. Zoë Washburne: I know somethin' ain't right. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: Sweetie, we're crooks. If everything were right we'd be in jail. Mal: If anyone gets nosey, you know, just... shoot 'em. Zoë Washburne: Shoot 'em? Mal: Politely. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne: Can we all vote on the murdering people issue? Lawrence Dobson: All right, I can see you're not an idiot. Jayne Cobb: Well, I wish I could say the same, Lawrence. Jayne Cobb: Testing. Testing. Captain can you hear me? Mal: I'm standing right here. Jayne Cobb: You're coming in good and loud. Mal: 'Cause I'm standing right here. Mal: [referring to the naked River] What the hell is this? Dr. Simon Tam: This is my sister. Inara Serra: How many babies have you actually delivered? Dr. Simon Tam: As the primary? This would be the first. You? Inara Serra: My first too. River Tam: Mine too. Monte: Mal, I want you to meet my Bridget. [Mal and Saffron/Bridget draw guns] Monte: So, you guys have met...
