艺名黄楚云。广东中山人。1906年生。在香港受教育。因醉心电影事业，1930年考入香港联华演员养成所，成为第一届毕业的高材生。毕业后，加入联华厂当演员，曾参予《夜半枪声》等默片的演出。1933年，入国联影片公司当导演。他执导的第一部影片是香港出品的第一部恐怖片《盗尸》，他亦是该片的男主角之一。从1933年至1964年，他共在香港执导过78部影片。1963年，与莫康时、龙图、胡鹏等著名粤语片导演结义为十兄弟，并组织十兄弟影片公司。1964年病逝。其导演的影片主要有《战地归来》、《落花飞絮》、《蝴蝶夫人》、《钟馗捉鬼》、《私生子》、《金粉世家》、《豪门怨》及《苦女江海燕》等。
